Low cement refractory castable is a high-performance monolithic refractory material. Its primary feature lies in its low cement content, generally below 8% to 10%, and can even be as low as 1%–2%. Optimized formulations and manufacturing processes endow this material with high mechanical strength, high refractoriness, low porosity and excellent corrosion resistance. It is widely used as lining for high-temperature equipment in industries including metallurgy, electric power, petrochemicals and building materials.

 

The main characteristics of low cement refractory castables include

 

 Low cement content: The dosage of calcium aluminate cement in conventional refractory castables is usually 15%–20%, while the cement dosage of low cement castables is greatly reduced, generally ranging from 5% to 8% or even lower. This inhibits the formation of low-melting eutectic phases inside the material and improves its refractoriness and high-temperature strength.

 High Strength and High Refractoriness: By adopting additives such as ultrafine powder and water reducing agents, low cement castables gain enhanced mechanical strength and refractory performance. For instance, the modulus of rupture of certain high-performance low cement castables can exceed 1450 MPa, with a maximum service temperature above 1550℃.

 Low Porosity and High Bulk Density: Thanks to the reduced cement content, low cement castables feature low porosity and high bulk density, which further improve their thermal shock resistance and corrosion resistance.

 Easy Construction: Low cement castables require less mixing water during installation with short mixing time. Besides, fewer cement hydrates form in the curing process, so spalling or cracks rarely occur during baking.

 Environmental Benefits: Low cement castables cut down cement consumption and reduce CO₂ emissions, complying with the requirements of green manufacturing.

 

Classification and Application of Low Cement Refractory Castables

 

According to different raw materials, low cement castables can be classified into various types such as high alumina, mullite and corundum, which are suitable for different industrial fields and equipment parts. For example:

 

 High Alumina Low Cement Castable: Mainly applied in high-temperature environments such as high-alumina kilns and incinerators.

 Mullite Low Cement Castable: Suitable for kiln hoods, the rear end of coolers and other sections.

 Corundum Low Cement Castable: Widely used for ladles, iron troughs and other components.

 

Formulation and Process Requirements

 

 The formulation of low cement castables requires strict control over raw material ratios and process conditions. For example, ultrafine powders (such as silica fume) are adopted to partially replace calcium aluminate cement, together with water reducers and retarders added to optimize material properties. In addition, the mixing water dosage and baking curve must be well controlled during construction to prevent degradation of material performance.
