Introduction
Fused rebonded magnesia-chrome bricks are produced by first melting lightly calcined magnesia and chrome ore in an electric arc furnace to create fused magnesia-chrome sand. This material is then crushed, ground, mixed, formed, and fired. With minimized impurities and firing temperatures exceeding 1750°C, these bricks offer high-temperature performance superior to sintered magnesia-chrome bricks and comparable to fused bricks.
They exhibit an extremely high load softening temperature of over 1700°C and are characterized by excellent refractoriness, high strength at elevated temperatures, strong resistance to alkaline slag erosion, and good thermal stability. They also have moderate resistance to acidic slags. The main components of fused rebonded magnesia-chrome bricks are magnesia and chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃), with periclase and spinel as the primary mineral phases. This results in a high-quality refractory material with a uniform spinel distribution that enhances erosion resistance.
Advantage
High-temperature strength: High compressive and flexural strength; excellent erosion resistance at high temperatures (suitable for long-term use at 1600–1700°C).
Thermal shock resistance: Low coefficient of thermal expansion; better resistance to rapid temperature changes than ordinary magnesia-chrome bricks.
Corrosion resistance: Excellent resistance to slag, alkali vapors, and acidic gases (e.g., SO₂).
Spalling resistance: Dense microstructure reduces the risk of spalling during service.

Raw Materials
High-purity magnesia (MgO) and chromite (Cr₂O₃) are melted in an electric arc furnace to produce fused magnesia-chromite sand. This fused material is then crushed, formed, and fired at high temperature.

Process
Rebonding process: Refers to the secondary sintering of fused magnesia-chrome sand (typically ≥1700°C) to create a stable direct-bonded structure and enhance material properties.
Process Characteristics
Advantages of fusion: Homogeneous raw material composition in the molten state; dense product structure; excellent erosion resistance.
Rebonding technology: Forms a direct bonding network via high-temperature sintering, significantly improving high-temperature strength and thermal shock resistance.
Energy consumption control: The electrofusion process is energy-intensive; optimizing electrode design and melting efficiency is essential.

Applications
Cement industry: Used in the transition and firing zones of cement rotary kilns; resists clinker erosion and alkali corrosion. High Cr₂O₃ formulations (10–15%) enhance resistance to clinker attack.
Glass industry: Applied in heat storage chambers and working pools of glass furnaces; resists high-temperature glass corrosion. Lower Cr₂O₃ formulations (5–8%) help reduce contamination of the glass melt.
Metallurgy: Suitable for non-ferrous metal smelting furnaces (e.g., copper smelting); resists slag and molten metal erosion. Addition of metallic aluminum powder enhances resistance to metal penetration.
