Introduction
Fireclay Brick are weakly acidic refractory materials with an alumina (Al₂O₃) content ranging from 30% to 48%. They are manufactured using chamotte as aggregates and refractory clay as the binder.
Generally, the refractoriness under load of clay bricks is between 1250 °C and 1400 °C. Accordingly, their recommended service temperature should be kept below 1400 °C.
The hot compressive strength of clay bricks increases with increasing Al₂O₃ content. Meanwhile, it is affected by the firing temperature, as well as the quantity and viscosity of the liquid phase generated from low-melting-point substances at high temperatures. Plastic deformation usually occurs at around 800 °C, which relieves thermal stress and improves the strength of the bricks. The strength reaches its peak at 1000–1200 °C. When the temperature exceeds 1200 °C, the liquid phase increases sharply and its viscosity decreases, leading to a rapid drop in compressive strength. Even when only one side of the brickwork in furnace walls is heated, clay bricks are not suitable for excessively high service temperatures.
They are only applicable to secondary zones of industrial kilns and furnaces where the temperature is within the rated range, with no severe abrasion and no load-bearing requirements. If used in core high-temperature zones, the bricks are prone to wear and spalling, which shortens the service life of the furnace and increases downtime and maintenance costs.

application
Coke Oven: Used in doors, roofs, and flues (non-critical parts); less resistant to alkaline slag but cost-effective.
Heating Furnace: Bottoms and walls in low to medium temperature zones (e.g., average heat section).
Annealing Furnace:Lining and checker bricks.
Rotary Kiln Preheater: Lining for cyclones and decomposition furnaces (resistant to SiO₂-rich slag).
Cooler:Checker bricks used in low-temperature zones requiring high thermal shock resistance.
Regenerative Chambers: Checker bricks resistant to acidic high-temperature gases (require periodic replacement).
Melting Section Chest Walls: For areas not in direct contact with molten glass.
Tunnel Kilns: Kiln car decks and wall linings (resist volatile component erosion).
Shuttle Kilns: Used in hearths and flues.
