Introduction
Regular bonded magnesia chrome brick is a common refractory material mainly used in high-temperature industrial equipment such as cement kilns, glass melting furnaces, and steel furnaces. Typically referred to simply as magnesia chrome bricks, this generally implies fired, ordinary magnesia chrome bricks, also known as silicate-bonded magnesia chrome bricks. These are alkaline refractory products with magnesite and spinel as the main mineral components.
Advantage
High-Temperature Performance:Service temperature: Suitable for 1400–1600°C, with short-term tolerance up to ~1650°C.
Mechanical Properties:Compressive strength: 60–100 MPa.
Thermal Shock Resistance:Moderate resistance to rapid temperature changes (e.g., withstands 3–5 cycles of water quenching at 1100°C).
Slag resistance:Effective against alkaline slags (e.g., steelmaking slag) due to the compatibility of magnesium oxide.
Oxidation Resistance:Chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) forms protective scales at high temperatures, slowing the oxidation of MgO to MgO-Fe₂O₃ (periclase).
Lower Production Cost:Simplified manufacturing (no need for high-purity raw materials or ultra-high sintering temperatures) reduces energy and material costs.
Ease of Fabrication:Clay bonding allows for flexible shaping, making it suitable for complex brick geometries.

Magnesium Oxide (MgO): 60%–80%; provides refractoriness and resistance to alkaline erosion.
Chromium Oxide (Cr₂O₃): 10%–30%; enhances high-temperature strength, thermal shock resistance, and creep resistance.
Binder: 5%–10% refractory clay or organic additives to ensure green body strength.

Process
Bonding Method:
Clay serves as the bonding agent, reacting with MgO and Cr₂O₃ at high temperatures to form a ceramic bond-a relatively simple process.
Sintering Temperature:
Approximately 1500–1600°C, lower than that of directly bonded MgCr bricks.

-Raw Material Preparation
MgO: Usually sourced from magnesite (MgCO₃), producing lightly calcined magnesia (MgO ≥ 85%).
Cr₂O₃: Obtained from calcined chromite (FeCr₂O₄), added at 10%–30%.
Binder: Refractory clays (e.g., kaolin or bentonite) added at 5%–10%.
-Dry Mixing
Mix MgO, Cr₂O₃, and clay in specified proportions.
-Wet Molding
Add water or an organic binder (e.g., carboxymethyl cellulose), then press hydraulically at ~100–200 MPa.
-Drying
Dry in a tunnel dryer at 110–150°C for 24–48 hours.
-Sintering
Sinter in a rotary or shuttle kiln at 1500–1600°C for 2–4 hours.
Key reaction: Clay reacts with MgO to form ceramic bonding phases (e.g., MgAl₂O₄).
-Quality Inspection
Test compressive strength, bulk density, apparent porosity, and thermal shock resistance.
-Finished Product Packaging
Bricks are packed with moisture-proof protection for safe transportation.
application
Regular bonded magnesia chrome bricks are widely used in:

Cement kilns
Transition zone (1400–1500°C): Exposed to clinker erosion and thermal shock.
Decomposition zone (1300–1400°C): Subject to alkali vapor (e.g., K₂O, Na₂O) and sulfur compounds.
Cooler linings: Used in zones not directly exposed to high heat.
Glass Furnaces
Melting section front wall (1500–1600°C): Faces molten glass and flames.
Clarification section sidewalls: Exposed to alkali vapors and silica.
Working tank and forehearth (1400–1500°C): Requires resistance to thermal shock and abrasion.
Flow holes: For resisting high-velocity molten glass flow.

Small and medium-sized industrial furnaces
Heating furnace linings: E.g., forging and rolling furnaces (800–1300°C).
Annealing furnace working layers: Protects furnace walls from oxidizing atmospheres and minor slag attack.
Drying furnace linings: Resists chemical corrosion in hot, humid environments.
Rotary kiln transition zones: For cement and chemical kilns.
Flue and chimney linings: Withstands acidic/alkaline exhaust gas.
