Clay Refractory Brick - Overview

Clay refractory bricks, also known as fire bricks, are a type of ceramic brick designed to withstand high temperatures and are commonly used in the construction of furnaces, kilns, and other heat-intensive applications. They are made from fireclay, a type of clay that can withstand high temperatures without melting or deforming. These bricks offer excellent thermal insulation, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance.

High Refractoriness

Capable of withstanding service temperatures up to 1,760°C (3,200°F), suitable for most non-ferrous and ferrous applications.

Excellent Thermal Shock Resistance

Fire clay bricks can endure rapid changes in temperature without cracking, making them ideal for furnaces that undergo frequent cycling.

Mechanical Strength

High compressive strength ensures the bricks maintain integrity under heavy load and thermal stress.

Low Thermal Conductivity

Helps reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency in industrial settings.

Chemical Resistance

Resistant to acidic and neutral slags, some grades can also withstand mild alkaline environments.

Dimensional Stability

Retain shape and structure even at elevated temperatures, reducing maintenance frequency.

Application of Clay Refractory Brick

Iron and steel industry

In iron and steel production, clay refractory bricks are mainly used as lining materials for blast furnaces, hot stoves, ladles, hot metal ladles and other equipment. Because of its high refractoriness and corrosion resistance, high alumina clay brick is often used in key parts of blast furnace, such as furnace bottom and hearth. Ordinary clay bricks are used in checker bricks, vaults and other parts of hot blast stoves. Clay refractory bricks can withstand the erosion of high-temperature molten iron and slag, and at the same time resist the erosion of high-temperature airflow, providing reliable protection for steel production equipment.

Building materials industry

In cement production, clay refractory bricks are widely used in the lining of cement rotary kiln, preheater, calciner and other equipment. Its corrosion resistance and wear resistance can effectively resist the chemical erosion of cement clinker and the wear of materials, and prolong the service life of kiln lining. In addition, clay refractory bricks are also used in the breast wall, crown and other parts of glass melting furnace, which can withstand the high temperature erosion of glass liquid and the erosion of air flow.

Energy industry

In the field of energy, clay refractory bricks are used for lining of coke ovens, boilers, garbage incinerators and other equipment. Its high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance can withstand the heat and chemical erosion caused by high temperature fuel combustion, and at the same time resist the wear of acid gas and ash in flue gas. The application of clay refractory bricks not only improves the operation efficiency of energy equipment, but also reduces the maintenance cost and downtime of equipment.

Civil field

In addition to industrial applications, clay refractory bricks are also widely used in civil fields, such as home fireplaces, pizza oven and outdoor ovens. Its good high temperature resistance and thermal shock resistance can ensure the safety and stability of the furnace body in the long-term use process, and its beautiful appearance and good thermal insulation performance also add a comfort and warmth to family life.

Process of Clay Refractory Brick
01.

Raw Material Processing

Kaolin or clay ore is crushed and finely ground (particle size <2 mm); some raw materials may require pre-calcination.

02.

Batching and Mixing

Clinker and bonding clay are proportionally mixed (typically 70%–85% clinker and 15%–30% bonding clay) and blended with water.

03.

Molding

Machine-pressed under 100–200 MPa; high-pressure molding is used for high-density bricks.

04.

Drying and Sintering

Drying: 100–150°C
Sintering: 1300–1400°C (high-temperature stage promotes mullite formation).

Composition of Fire Clay

Low-creep Clay Brick

Silica

Silica (SiO2) becomes soft at about 2800℉ and finally fuses and becomes a glassy substance at about 3200℉. It melts around 3300℉. This high softening and melting point has established it as the principal material for the production of refractory bricks.

Low-porosity Clay Brick

Alumina

Alumina (Al2O3) has even higher softening and fusion temperature than silica. It melts at about 3800℉. It is, therefore, used in combination with silica.

Fireclay Brick

Lime, Magnesia, Iron oxide and Alkalis

The presence of these detrimental components acts as fluxes to lower the softening and fusion temperature.

FAQ

Q: How to use refractory bricks?

A: The refractory bricks have a very high melting point and are often made to withstand temperatures in excess of 1000°C (1832°F). This allows them to be used in applications where exposure to heat is long lasting. Even under severe thermal stress, they do not easily crack or deform, hence keeping their shapes intact.

Q: Why do my fire bricks keep cracking?

A: Thermal stress: Rapid changes in temperature, such as when starting a fire or adding too much fuel too quickly, can cause the liner bricks to expand and contract rapidly, leading to cracks.

Q: What are the ingredients in refractory bricks?

A: Refractory bricks contain around 25 to 30% alumina and 60 to 70% of silica. They also contain oxides of magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Refractory bricks find application in the construction of kilns, furnaces, etc. They can withstand temperatures up to 2100 degrees Celsius.

Q: What is your MOQ?

A: 50PCS.

Q: Can I get samples?

A: Of course, we usually provide existing sample for free, however a little sample charge is needed for custom designs. Sampls charge is refundable when order is up to a certain quantity.

Q: How long is the lead time of the samples?

A: For existing samples, it takes 3-5 days.

Q: How long is the production lead time?

A: For some itesm we keep some stock that can be delived in 2 weeks. New poductioin leadtime 60-80 days.
