Introduction

Wear-resistant plastics are made from refractory aggregates and powders, raw clay, chemical composite binders, and additives. After formulation, mixing, extrusion into brick shapes, and a storage period, they retain good plasticity and can be installed using ramming methods.

They are categorized by refractory aggregate type into clay-based, high-alumina, mullite, corundum, chromium, silicon carbide, and zirconia-containing plastics. Based on binder types, they include those using aluminum sulfate, phosphoric acid, phosphates, water glass, and resins.

Main characteristics

 Refractory Performance

The refractoriness generally ranges from 1600–1750°C, making it suitable for medium- to low-temperature environments (≤1300°C).

It exhibits low shrinkage at high temperatures but is not suitable for ultra-high-temperature conditions (>1300°C).

High-temperature strength depends on ceramic bonding (e.g., ceramic phases formed through clay sintering), and strength development occurs gradually.

 Abrasion Resistance

Aggregate particles provide mechanical strength to resist wear from scouring, friction, and impact.

Ideal for components frequently exposed to solid particles or fluid erosion, such as kiln linings and flue ducts.

 Construction and Repair Convenience

High plasticity: Remains in a pliable, muddy state at room temperature, allowing direct manual or mechanical application. It adapts well to complex shapes, custom components, and localized repairs without the need for complex equipment.

On-site molding: Reduces kiln downtime and is well-suited for emergency repairs or temporary reinforcements.

 Cost Advantage

Raw materials (e.g., clay and common refractory aggregates) are widely available and lower in cost than phosphate-based plastics.

Suitable for cost-sensitive, medium- to low-temperature wear-resistant and refractory applications.

Comparison with Other Refractory Materials

Material Type Wear-Resistant Refractory Plastic Refractory Castable Refractory Brick
Construction Method Rammed/extruded molding, highly plastic Casting after mixing with water, requiring molds Masonry, requiring prefabricated components
Application Scenarios Special-shaped parts, repairs, medium-to-low-temperature wear-resistant parts Complex structures, high-temperature load-bearing parts Fixed shapes, long-term high-temperature parts
Cost Lower (raw materials easily available) Medium (requires binders and aggregates) Higher (high prefabrication and processing costs)
Repair Convenience Direct local repair possible Requires overall dismantling or local casting Requires brick replacement, with higher difficulty

Applications

 Metallurgical Industry

Linings for furnace walls and roofs of reheating and soaking furnaces

Wear-resistant and refractory repairs for flue ducts and chimneys

 Building Materials Industry

Linings for low-temperature zones in cement kilns (e.g., preheaters, coolers)

Worn parts such as kiln linings and feed inlets in ceramic kilns

 Chemical and Power Industry

Linings for boilers and medium-temperature wear-resistant components in gas generators

Temporary repairs for localized damage to high-temperature equipment (e.g., reactor linings, worn pipelines)

Precautions for construction and use

 Temperature Limitations

Avoid construction in environments below 5°C or above 35°C:

Low temperatures delay hardening

High temperatures cause rapid water evaporation, affecting compactness and final strength

 Curing Requirements

After molding, allow natural curing for at least 24 hours

Avoid direct exposure to high temperatures during this period to ensure full sintering of the binder (e.g., clay) and stable structure formation

 Storage and Reuse

Store in a sealed container in a dry location to prevent moisture-induced hardening

If plasticity decreases after the expiration date, small amounts of water may be added for re-mixing and reuse; however, material performance must be tested to ensure compliance
