Mullite castable is a type of refractory castable with excellent properties such as high load softening temperature, good thermal shock resistance, and strong erosion resistance. It is widely used in industrial furnace linings, ladle covers, intermediate ladle linings, and similar applications. The main component of mullite castable is mullite, known for its good refractoriness and high-temperature performance. It is suitable for cement kilns, power plant boilers, sulfur recovery units, and other industrial furnaces-especially in areas like furnace doors, burner openings, and observation port linings.
Advantage
High Refractoriness: Typically above 1700°C. It can operate stably in environments ranging from 1400–1650°C and can serve as a working lining directly exposed to flames, supporting energy efficiency at high temperatures.
Good Thermal Shock Resistance: Due to a low coefficient of thermal expansion and a reasonable ratio of materials with mismatched expansion rates (such as mullite and corundum), microcracks can form, absorbing thermal stress and withstanding rapid temperature changes.
High Strength: The material has high compressive and high-temperature strength. Room temperature compressive strength can reach ≥120 MPa. It resists both thermal shock and high-temperature spalling, ensuring the structural stability of kilns. The high load softening temperature allows it to retain strength and integrity under extreme heat.
Excellent Abrasion Resistance: The hardness and strength of corundum, along with the interlocking needle-like crystal structure of mullite, confer excellent wear resistance, extending service life and protecting against high-temperature material flow.
Strong Erosion Resistance: It offers excellent resistance to both acidic and basic slags, molten materials, and corrosive agents-reducing lining erosion and prolonging the kiln's service life.
Good Workability: Mullite castables are easy to install under varying construction conditions. They can be poured in place, formed in sections, or shaped as needed for precise application.
Low Thermal Conductivity: The porous mullite aggregate gives the castable good insulation properties. Compared to ordinary castables, it can reduce kiln heat loss by 25%–35% and save about 10% in fuel consumption.

Ingredients and Proportioning
Main Ingredients: Mullite and composite superfine powder serve as the primary components. Typically, mullite particles and powder are used as aggregates. Corundum particles, alumina micropowder, and similar materials may also be added.
Binders: Pure calcium aluminate cement, silica fume (micropowder), and silica sol are commonly used as binders. These effectively bond the aggregates and ensure the integrity and strength of the castable.
Admixtures: Common admixtures include plasticizers, reinforcing agents, demolding agents, retarders, water reducers, etc., which improve fluidity, crack resistance, setting time, and other working properties.

Applications
Iron and Steel Industry: Used for linings in blast furnaces, hot blast stoves, reheating furnaces, and soaking pits. It resists high-temperature gas and material scouring, extending equipment service life.
Petrochemical Industry: Applied in the linings of atmospheric and vacuum distillation furnaces, sulfur recovery units, etc., where it resists high-temperature and chemical corrosion.
Power Industry: Used for boiler linings, steam pipe insulation, and insulating layers in various power plant systems, enhancing thermal efficiency.
Building Materials Industry: Commonly used in cement kiln linings-especially kiln doors, burner openings, and observation ports-due to its high-temperature and wear resistance.
Construction Points
Ambient Temperature: If the ambient temperature is below 5°C, the dry mix should be stored in a heated space. Water for mixing can be preheated (below 40°C), and thermal blankets or heating devices should be used to maintain a mixing temperature above 10°C. Accelerators may be added under the guidance of technical personnel.
Mixing: A mechanical mixer should be used to mix the dry material thoroughly before water is added. Water content must be strictly controlled to ensure proper performance. Manual mixing is prohibited.
Water Addition: The amount of water varies depending on product density, typically around 8%.
Pouring and Curing: During pouring, molds must be properly supported, and vibrating rods used to eliminate air pockets. After pouring, natural curing should take place for 24–48 hours before demolding. The drying and heating process must be gradual to prevent thermal cracking.
