Description

Corundum castables are refractory materials made with alumina as the primary aggregate and powder, combined with various binders. They exhibit outstanding performance characteristics, making them widely applicable in high-temperature industrial environments.

They offer excellent high-temperature resistance, maintaining structural stability even under extreme conditions without softening or deforming. This makes them ideal for linings in various high-temperature kilns and thermal equipment.

They also possess superior abrasion resistance. In high-temperature and high-velocity environments, they effectively resist wear, extending equipment service life and reducing maintenance costs.

Additionally, corundum castables provide good impact resistance, withstanding strong impacts and vibrations under harsh conditions, thereby ensuring stable equipment operation.

Advantages

High Strength:
Corundum castables have higher mechanical strength than high-alumina or mullite refractory castables. They can withstand greater pressure and load and are not easily deformed or cracked at high temperatures.

Excellent Abrasion Resistance:
These materials resist friction and impact from high-temperature solids or gas-solid flows, reducing material wear and extending service life.

High-Temperature Stability:
Volume changes under high-temperature conditions are minimal, allowing the castables to maintain a stable shape and size over time. The crystal structure is stable, and performance remains consistent during high-temperature sintering.

Erosion Resistance:
These castables have strong resistance to slag penetration and can effectively withstand corrosion from molten slag and metal, ensuring furnace integrity and safety.

Improved Thermal Shock Resistance:
While not as strong in thermal shock resistance as some other materials, they still perform well at high temperatures and can tolerate moderate temperature fluctuations.

Convenient Construction:
They can be quickly molded through simple casting or pre-fabricated into parts by the manufacturer. This flexibility allows for easy construction without complex processing or installation procedures.

Categorization

Sub-white corundum castables:
Made from calcined alumina or industrial alumina melted at high temperatures in an electric arc furnace. These are white in color, have large crystals with high porosity (6%–10%), and alumina content greater than 98.5%. The main crystalline phase is alumina micro-powder, with crystals shaped as elongated or rhombic.

Brown corundum castables:
Produced in an electric arc furnace at around 2000°C using natural high-alumina materials mixed with a small amount of iron filings and carbon materials to remove impurities. The alumina content typically ranges from 94.5% to 97%.

Special high-alumina bauxite clinker castables:
These contain alumina content above 85%, with particles of various grain sizes. At high temperatures, the primary crystalline phase is corundum, accompanied by small amounts of mullite crystals and a glass phase.

Applications

Metallurgical Industry:
Used for lining steel vacuum degassing vessels (e.g., impregnation pipes), the triangular areas of electric furnace roofs, and LF furnace covers. Also applied in integral nozzles and argon-blowing metallurgy, where they withstand high temperatures and high-speed jet impact.

Power Industry:
Commonly used in high-temperature wear-resistant linings of power plant boilers and circulating fluidized bed (CFB) linings, where they resist heat, wear, and corrosion.

Petrochemical Industry:
Applied in catalytic cracking reactors as high-temperature wear-resistant linings. They endure both high heat and chemical erosion, ensuring efficient reactor operation.

Building Materials Industry:
Widely used in the linings of cement rotary kilns, glass furnaces, and similar equipment. These materials withstand high temperatures, mechanical wear, and chemical corrosion.
