Introduction
Silicon carbide bricks are refractory materials primarily composed of SiC, featuring a Mohs hardness of 9 and excellent stability against acidic slags. With SiC contents ranging from 72% to 99%, these bricks are categorized into various types, including:
Clay-bonded,Si₃N₄-bonded,Sialon-bonded,β-SiC-bonded,Si₂ON₂-bonded,Recrystallized silicon carbide bricks
Common applications include non-ferrous metallurgy, aluminum casting molds, electric furnace linings, and heat exchangers.
Manufacturing and Crystalline Structure
Silicon carbide bricks are produced using silicon carbide (typically black SiC with >96% purity) as the primary raw material. The manufacturing process includes batching, mixing, shaping, and firing-with or without the use of binders.
Renowned for their high-performance characteristics-abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, high-temperature strength, thermal shock stability, high thermal conductivity, and low thermal expansion-they are considered advanced refractory materials.
Advantage
Exceptional Refractoriness
Silicon carbide has a high melting point, with refractoriness ranging from 1700–2000°C. It can endure high-temperature environments without softening or deforming, making it ideal for kiln linings and high-temperature components.
Superior Hardness and Strength
With a Mohs hardness of 9.2–9.5 (second only to diamond and cubic boron nitride), silicon carbide bricks exhibit excellent abrasion and impact resistance. They can withstand scouring, friction, and mechanical collisions without wear or structural damage, ensuring a long service life.
High Thermal Conductivity
Silicon carbide bricks possess thermal conductivity far greater than that of traditional refractory materials like clay and high-alumina bricks. This facilitates rapid heat transfer in kilns and thermal equipment, improving energy efficiency and supporting energy-saving goals.
Low Thermal Expansion
The low thermal expansion coefficient of silicon carbide bricks minimizes volume changes under high temperatures. This gives them outstanding thermal shock resistance, allowing them to withstand rapid temperature changes without cracking or spalling-ideal for kiln components exposed to frequent thermal cycling.
Excellent Chemical Stability
Silicon carbide bricks maintain structural integrity in both acidic and alkaline environments. In chemical kilns and high-temperature chemical processes, they resist corrosion and ensure long-term stability and reliability.
Oxidation Resistance
At certain temperatures, a dense silica protective film forms on the brick surface, shielding the internal SiC from further oxidation. However, oxidation resistance may diminish at extremely high temperatures or in specific atmospheres. Additives or surface coatings can be used to improve oxidation resistance in such conditions.
