Bauxite

Bauxite

Bauxite is a core raw material in the refractory industry. Its main component is alumina (Al₂O₃), which, after calcination, is made into high-alumina bauxite clinker. Due to its high refractoriness and strong erosion resistance, it serves as a fundamental material in high-temperature industries.

Introductions

High-alumina bauxite, also known as bauxite, bauxite (bauxite), mostly refractory materials counterparts, while the geological sector is called bauxite, the two can be compared. Bauxite refers to the calcined Al2O3 content of more than 48%, and Fe2O3 content is lower bauxite.

The main component is alumina, a hydrated alumina with impurities, is an earthy mineral. White or off-white, brownish yellow or light red due to iron. Density 3.45g/cm3, hardness 1 to 3, opaque, brittle. Extremely difficult to melt. Insoluble in water, soluble in sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide solution. Mainly used in aluminum refining, refractory materials.

Advantage

High refractoriness:

Bauxite refractories have very high refractoriness, generally above 1500 °C. High-grade bauxite clinker can reach up to 1780 °C, and in some cases, even exceed 1900 °C. These materials can maintain stable physicochemical properties over long periods in high-temperature environments.

Good thermal stability:

With a low coefficient of thermal expansion and strong thermal stability, bauxite refractories are resistant to deformation even under frequent temperature fluctuations. They can endure hot and cold cycles in high-temperature environments and effectively resist thermal stress and thermal shock.

Strong chemical erosion resistance:

Bauxite refractories offer excellent resistance to chemical corrosion. They can effectively resist the erosion of various acids, alkalis, and molten metals. In industries such as chemicals and metallurgy, they help reduce material loss and extend equipment service life.

High mechanical strength:

These materials have high mechanical strength, are not easily broken, and offer good impact resistance and durability. They can withstand heavy loads under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, making them suitable for components such as high-temperature melt blocks and boiler wall bricks.

Good insulation performance:

Some bauxite refractories have insulation resistivity ranging from 10⁵ to 10⁷ ohm·cm, effectively preventing dielectric breakdown and discharge phenomena. This makes them suitable for use in electronics, electrical equipment, and other high-voltage applications.

Process

Bauxite can be processed into refractory products of various grades and applications through a series of techniques such as ore dressing, crushing, grinding, and calcining. For example, high-alumina bauxite clinker can be melted in a high-temperature electric arc furnace, then blown and cooled to produce aluminum silicate refractory fibers. It can also be shaped into various refractory bricks, castables, coatings, and other refractory products through forming methods such as pressing and injection molding.

Application

Metallurgical Industry:

Used as a lining material for blast furnaces, converters, electric furnaces, and other equipment. It can withstand the erosion and impact of high-temperature molten iron and slag, thereby extending the service life of the furnace body.

Building Materials Industry:

Used as a lining material in cement rotary kilns, glass-melting kilns, and other thermal equipment. It resists the effects of high-temperature materials and flames, ensuring the normal operation of the equipment.

Chemical Industry:

Used for the linings of chemical reactors and pipelines to resist the effects of various corrosive media and high temperatures, ensuring the safety and stability of production processes.

Other Fields:

Also used in the aerospace industry for manufacturing thermal protection materials, and plays an important role in high-temperature equipment in the electric power, foundry, and other industries.
