
Introduction
Chromium corundum bricks are composite refractory materials primarily composed of alumina (Al₂O₃) and chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃). By incorporating chromium oxide crystals into the corundum matrix, they form refractory products with excellent erosion resistance. At high temperatures, Cr₂O₃ forms a continuous solid solution with Al₂O₃, giving chromium corundum products superior high-temperature properties compared to pure corundum materials.
The most commonly used chrome corundum products contain 9% to 15% Cr₂O₃. Their main mineral phase is the α-Al₂O₃–Cr₂O₃ solid solution. Refractory bricks with chromium oxide content ranging from 1% to 30% include two types: electrofused chrome corundum bricks and sintered chrome corundum bricks. Typically, "chrome corundum bricks" refers to the sintered type.
Advantages
Superior slag resistance: Cr₂O₃ reacts with components such as CaO and FeO in slag to form high-melting-point solid solutions (e.g., calcium-chromium garnet), which inhibit slag penetration. Resistance to alkaline slags (e.g., steelmaking or gasifier slags) exceeds that of ordinary corundum bricks by over 50%, more than doubling service life.
High-temperature mechanical stability: Exhibits room-temperature compressive strength ≥100 MPa, retaining over 80% of its strength at 1,400°C. Withstands heavy loads and mechanical shocks.
Thermal shock resistance: Can endure 10–15 cycles of water quenching from 1,100°C without cracking, outperforming magnesia-chrome bricks (which are limited due to Cr⁶⁺ pollution risks).
Chemical compatibility: Shows low wettability to steel, iron, and molten non-ferrous metals (e.g., copper, aluminum), and resists corrosion from reducing atmospheres (e.g., CO, H₂).

Raw Materials
Main materials: Electrofused corundum sand (Al₂O₃ ≥ 95%) and chrome ore sand (Cr₂O₃ ≥ 45%) mixed proportionally, with Cr₂O₃ accounting for 12%–20%.
Additives: Small amounts of MgO (≤2%) serve as sintering aids to promote grain boundary bonding.

Process
Isostatic pressing (pressure ≥ 150 MPa) or vibration molding is employed. The green body's density is ≥ 2.9 g/cm³.
Firing occurs at 1750–1850°C, with a soaking time of 10–15 hours, forming an interlocking corundum–chrome corundum microstructure.



Application
Ladle slag line: Resistant to erosion by high-alkalinity slag (R = 3.0–4.5), with a service life 30% longer than magnesia-carbon bricks.
Iron desulfurization furnace: Resistant to CaO–CaF₂ system slag and high-temperature sulfur atmosphere (1350–1450°C).
Coal - water slurry gasifier: Lining resists fly ash scouring and corrosion in a CO–H₂O mixed atmosphere (1400–1600°C).
High - temperature zone retaining bricks: Protect furnace from erosion by glass melts, e.g., at the junction between melting and cooling sections.
Copper smelting furnace: Furnace wall lining resists Cu₂O–FeO–SiO₂ system slag (1200–1300°C).
