Introduction
Dense zircon bricks are high-performance refractory materials made primarily from zircon (ZrSiO₄). Produced through the selection of high-purity raw materials, high-pressure molding, and high-temperature sintering, these bricks possess a dense structure and excellent corrosion resistance. They are widely used in high-temperature industries such as glass and metallurgy.
The main crystalline phase in dense zircon bricks is zircon (ZrSiO₄), a white solid with a high melting point, high packing density, and extremely low porosity. At elevated temperatures, these bricks demonstrate exceptional erosion resistance, slag resistance, dimensional stability, and thermal shock resistance, making them premium materials within the zircon-based refractory category.
These bricks exhibit a dense crystal structure, high bulk density, substantial mass, high mechanical strength at both room and elevated temperatures, excellent thermal shock resistance, minimal re-firing shrinkage, and low high-temperature creep. Additionally, they possess outstanding chemical stability and strong resistance to alkaline media.
Advantage
1. High Purity and Dense Structure
Raw Material Characteristics:
Using zircon (ZrSiO₄) as the primary raw material, with ZrO₂ content typically ≥65% and SiO₂ around 32–35%. Impurities (e.g., Fe₂O₃, CaO) are kept below 0.5%, resulting in higher purity compared to ordinary refractory bricks.
Physical Structure:
High-pressure molding (≥300 MPa) and sintering at temperatures above 1,750°C yield a bulk density ≥3.8 g/cm³ (close to 98% of theoretical density) and apparent porosity ≤1.5%. The result is an extremely dense, almost pore-free structure.
2. Excellent High-Temperature Resistance and Corrosion Performance
Temperature Tolerance:
With a melting point above 2,500°C, the bricks can operate continuously at 1,700–1,800°C. The creep rate at 1,550°C is <0.5% over 10,000 hours, ensuring long-term structural stability at high temperatures.
Corrosion Resistance:
Outstanding resistance to glass melts (e.g., silicate and borate glasses), with an annual erosion rate of <0.1 mm at 1,550°C-superior to AZS and corundum bricks. Also resists slag from non-ferrous metals (e.g., copper, aluminum, lead), fluorides (HF, SiF₄), and acidic gases (SO₂, Cl₂). In phosphate fertilizer rotary kilns, service life is extended by 40% compared to high-alumina bricks.
3. Exceptional Thermal Shock Resistance and Mechanical Properties
Thermal Shock Resistance:
Low thermal expansion coefficient (4.5–5.5 × 10⁻⁶/°C between 20–1000°C). Withstands over 15 water-quenching cycles at 1100°C without cracking. Ideal for conditions with rapid temperature changes (e.g., startup/shutdown phases of glass kilns).
Mechanical Strength:
Room-temperature compressive strength ≥300 MPa; flexural strength ≥45 MPa. High hardness (Mohs 7–8), offering excellent resistance to mechanical wear and abrasion.
4. Chemical Stability and Low Contamination Risk
Virtually no chemical reaction with glass melts or molten metals, making these bricks especially suitable for high-end applications such as optical glass and high-purity metal smelting.
Maintains excellent stability in oxidizing atmospheres. Avoid use in strong reducing conditions (e.g., CO concentration >5%), where ZrO₂ may reduce to ZrC, causing expansion and cracking.
