Introduction
Corundum bricks are refractory products with an alumina content exceeding 90%, with corundum as the main crystalline phase. They possess very high room-temperature compressive strengths (up to 120–150 MPa) and high load-softening onset temperatures (>1,700°C). Corundum bricks exhibit excellent chemical stability and strong resistance to acidic or alkaline slags, metals, and molten glass. Their thermal shock stability depends on their microstructure; dense products have good abrasion resistance but relatively poor thermal shock resistance.
Types
Sintered corundum bricks are made using sintered alumina as the raw material. After crushing, molding, and firing at 1,750–1,800°C, they have low porosity (<14%) and are mainly used in blast furnaces, refining furnaces, and similar applications.
Electrofused corundum bricks are produced by melting alumina with an electric arc and then casting it into shape. Due to their dense crystallization, they are suitable for erosion-resistant parts such as glass kiln chutes and gates.

Advantages
Ultra-high refractoriness:
Pure corundum bricks (Al₂O₃ ≥99%) have refractoriness exceeding 1,990°C. They can operate stably at 1,600–1,800°C for extended periods under no-load conditions, with some special grades tolerating short-term temperatures above 2,000°C.
High mechanical strength:
Ordinary corundum bricks have room-temperature compressive strengths ≥80 MPa, while high-purity electrofused bricks can reach 150–200 MPa. They maintain structural stability at high temperatures and withstand heavy loads and mechanical shocks.
Good chemical stability:
These bricks resist acidic or alkaline slags, metals, and molten glass. Their low wettability to molten metals (e.g., steel, aluminum, copper) prevents melt penetration, which could otherwise cause structural damage.
Good thermal stability:
After water-cooling cycle tests at 1,100°C, ordinary corundum bricks remain crack-free for 5–10 cycles, while improved versions endure over 15 cycles. Thermal conductivity ranges from 1.5–2.0 W/(m·K) at medium-low temperatures (≤600°C) to about 1.0 W/(m·K) at high temperatures (1,200°C), balancing insulation and heat conduction.
High density and low porosity:
Ordinary corundum bricks have a bulk density ≥2.8 g/cm³, while electrofused variants reach 3.2 g/cm³. With apparent porosity ≤5%, their dense structure inhibits slag and gas infiltration, extending service life.

Raw Materials
Corundum bricks are high-performance refractory materials primarily composed of alumina (Al₂O₃, content ≥90%), with corundum as the main crystal phase. Typically, the alumina content exceeds 90%, often reaching 99%, with low levels of impurities such as SiO₂, TiO₂, Fe₂O₃, MgO, and CaO.

Process
Raw material preparation: High-purity alumina powder is selected as the main raw material. Depending on requirements, small amounts of fluxes and additives (e.g., MgO, SiO₂, ZrO₂) may be added to enhance brick performance.
Mixing and molding: Raw materials are mixed in specific proportions, with appropriate binders (such as clay or phosphoric acid) added. They are thoroughly blended using mixing equipment, then pressed into the desired brick shape by brick presses or isostatic presses.
Drying and firing: After molding, the bricks are dried to remove moisture. They are then fired in high-temperature kilns, typically at 1,600–1,800°C. The exact firing temperature depends on the brick type and raw material formulation.
Application
Iron and steel metallurgy industry: Used in critical components of high-temperature equipment (e.g., blast furnaces, hot blast furnaces, electric furnaces, converters), including furnace roofs, walls, bottoms, and tap holes. These bricks withstand erosion from high-temperature iron/slag and mechanical impact.
Non-ferrous metal smelting industry: Used in smelting furnaces for copper, aluminum, lead, zinc, and others as high-temperature linings that resist erosion from molten metals and salts.
Glass industry:Applied to critical parts of glass melting kilns (e.g., pool walls, spouts, crowns, charging ports), enduring erosion and scouring from high-temperature glass melts.
Ceramic industry: Used in high-temperature zones of ceramic kilns (e.g., walls, roofs, kiln car surfaces) to ensure the high-quality firing of ceramic products.
Petrochemical industry: Serves as refractory linings in high-temperature reaction equipment (e.g., cracking furnaces, reforming furnaces, gasifiers) for oil refining and chemical processes, withstanding high temperatures and chemical corrosion.
Power industry: Used in power station boilers, gas turbines, and other high-temperature equipment for refractory protection, resisting erosion from high-temperature flue gas and fly ash.
