Introduction
Andalusite high-alumina bricks are primarily made from andalusite with added bauxite. They are formed under high pressure, dried, and fired at 1500°C. These bricks are known for their high-temperature resistance, high load softening temperature, low creep rate at elevated temperatures, and excellent volume stability. They also have a low thermal expansion coefficient and low thermal conductivity.
Andalusite has a refractoriness of up to 1830°C and demonstrates good chemical corrosion resistance. Incorporating andalusite into high-alumina bricks enhances abrasion resistance, raises the load softening temperature, and improves thermal shock resistance. This results in greater brick density at high temperatures, enhancing the tightness of high-alumina brick masonry and improving resistance to slag penetration.
Advantage
• High Temperature and Corrosion Resistance: Refractoriness reaches up to 1800°C or higher, allowing these bricks to perform well in high-temperature environments like hot blast stoves and resist chemical corrosion from acids, alkalis, and other substances.
• Excellent Thermal Shock Resistance: Maintains structural stability under thermal shock, effectively resisting stress caused by frequent temperature fluctuations and supporting continuous kiln operation.
• Low Creep Rate: Displays minimal deformation under long-term high-temperature exposure, preserving structural integrity and extending service life.
• High Load-Bearing Softening Temperature: Maintains physical properties under heavy loads at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for high-pressure, high-temperature applications.
• Reduction of Harmful Impurities:Effectively reduces harmful impurities during production, improving product quality and safety.
• Good Resistance to Thermal Spalling: Withstands rapid temperature changes without spalling, ensuring brick integrity and minimizing structural damage.

Areas of application
Iron and Steel Industry:
Widely used for lining hot blast furnaces (including furnace walls, checker bricks, furnace roofs, and combustion chambers), as well as in blast furnace tops, tapholes, ladles, tundishes, and other equipment. It resists high temperatures, slag corrosion, and thermal stress, ensuring stable operation under extreme conditions.
Other Industries:
Also applied in high-temperature equipment such as heating furnaces in the glass industry, saggar supports in the ceramics industry, rotary kilns in the cement industry, and pre-baked anode cells in the aluminum industry. Additionally, it is used in producing multiphase composite materials and insulating ceramics.
The Difference Between Andalusite Brick And High Alumina Brick
Composition
Andalusite Brick:
The main component is andalusite, an aluminum silicate mineral (Al₂SiO₅). When heated, andalusite transforms into mullite and silica, so andalusite bricks also contain mullite and a small amount of glass phase.
High-Alumina Brick:
Primarily composed of alumina (Al₂O₃), with grades classified based on alumina content:
First-grade: ≥75%
Second-grade: 65%–75%
Third-grade: 55%–65%
These bricks also contain minor amounts of silica (SiO₂), titanium oxide (TiO₂), and other impurities.
Performance Characteristics
Andalusite Brick:
Offers excellent thermal shock resistance due to the energy-absorbing crystalline transformation of andalusite during heating. Also features high-temperature strength, a high load softening point, and maintains structural stability at elevated temperatures.
High-Alumina Brick:
Refractoriness generally ranges from 1770°C to 1790°C and increases with higher alumina content. These bricks provide high hardness, abrasion resistance, and chemical stability-resisting slag and molten metal corrosion under high temperatures.
Production process
Andalusite Bricks:
The raw andalusite is crushed and sieved, then mixed with a binder (e.g., clay or water glass). After forming (via pressing or extrusion) and drying, the bricks are fired at high temperatures. During firing, andalusite transforms into mullite, forming a stable structure that imparts excellent properties.
High-Alumina Bricks:
Made from high-alumina bauxite, which is first calcined for volume stability, then crushed, sieved, and mixed with binders (e.g., waste pulp liquor or tar). After forming and drying, the bricks are fired at 1500–1600°C to develop a stable alumina crystalline phase.
Application
Andalusite Bricks:
Commonly used in thermal equipment such as hot blast furnaces, soaking pits in the metallurgical industry, cement rotary kilns, and glass kilns. They are especially suitable for areas requiring high thermal shock resistance, like hot blast stove regenerators and cement kiln transition zones.
High-Alumina Bricks:
Widely used in high-temperature kilns across steel, non-ferrous metallurgy, chemical, and ceramic industries. They line blast furnaces, converters, electric furnaces, reflector furnaces, and reaction chambers, enduring high temperatures, abrasion, and corrosion in demanding environments.
