Introduction

Sillimanite-based products are manufactured by adding sillimanite, andalusite, or kyanite-along with trace elements-to the raw materials of high alumina bricks. This addition improves thermal shock resistance and significantly reduces high-temperature creep.

These bricks are used as lining materials for steel outlet channels in blast furnaces and ladles in glass kiln steelmaking furnaces.

Advantage

High Refractoriness: With a refractoriness between 1770°C and 1830°C, these bricks remain stable in high-temperature environments, resisting melting or softening. They are suitable for harsh conditions in glass kilns, blast furnaces, and other high-temperature industrial furnaces.

Excellent Thermal Shock Stability: During high-temperature mullitization, silica nepheline exhibits minimal volume expansion and linear change, ensuring dimensional stability. This allows the bricks to withstand rapid temperature changes without cracking or spalling, providing outstanding thermal shock resistance.

High Load Softening Point: The load softening temperature ranges from 1500°C to 1650°C, enabling the bricks to maintain structural integrity under load at elevated temperatures. This property ensures kiln stability and extends service life.

Strong Erosion Resistance: These bricks resist corrosion from metallurgical slags and various glass melts, withstanding high-temperature scouring and chemical attack. This reduces wear and improves kiln operational efficiency and safety.

Superior High-Temperature Abrasion Resistance: In high-temperature environments, silica bricks maintain high surface hardness and abrasion resistance, enduring material friction and impact while preserving brick integrity. They are ideal for heavily worn areas.

Raw Material Characteristics

Silica Minerals: Natural aluminum silicate minerals (e.g., sillimanite group) with a Mohs hardness of about 7 and refractoriness of ≥1700°C.

High-Temperature Phase Transition: When heated above 1500°C, sillimanite minerals gradually transform into mullite (3Al₂O₃·2SiO₂) and a glassy phase, accompanied by a 15–20% volume expansion. This expansion reinforces the material's structural integrity.

process

Raw Material Selection and Processing: High-quality silica concentrates, synthetic mullite, high-alumina clinker, kaolin, and other raw materials are selected. The materials undergo crushing, ball milling, flotation, and other processes to achieve the desired particle size and purity, while removing impurities.

Forming Processes: Two primary methods are used:

Slurry Casting: Prepare a homogeneous slurry and inject it into gypsum molds. After solidification, demold to obtain the green body.

Press Molding: Mix the raw materials, place them into molds, and apply pressure using a press to form the green body.

Drying and Firing: After forming, the green bodies are dried to remove moisture, then fired in a kiln at high temperatures (typically 1500–1700°C). This firing promotes mullitization of silica, enhancing strength and refractory properties.

applications

Metallurgical Industry

Steelmaking: Converter linings, electric furnace linings, and continuous casting tundish channels.

Blast Furnaces:

Furnace Lining: Exposed to high-temperature molten iron, slag erosion, scouring, and frequent thermal fluctuations, silica bricks' high refractoriness, erosion resistance, and thermal shock stability effectively withstand these harsh conditions, minimizing lining damage and repair frequency and extending blast furnace life.

Furnace Throat: Subject to impact and friction from charging materials, silica bricks' high strength and abrasion resistance maintain throat integrity, improving operational efficiency.

Hot Blast Stoves: Used in regenerators (heat storage chambers) and combustion chambers, silica bricks maintain excellent heat exchange efficiency and structural stability at high temperatures, improving stove thermal efficiency and service life.

Glass Industry

Glass Furnaces: Used in regenerators and working pool linings.
Glass Tank Kilns: Commonly applied to flow holes, silica bricks resist high-temperature glass melt scouring and corrosion, maintaining structural integrity and preventing leakage, thus enhancing glass quality and production efficiency.
Tin Baths:Used for roof bricks in float glass production lines, silica bricks withstand high temperatures and reducing atmospheres, resisting oxidation and tin penetration, extending tin bath life and ensuring glass forming quality.

Feeding Systems: Used in feeding channels and distributors to ensure uniform, stable molten glass delivery, silica bricks provide thermal stability and abrasion resistance for reliable operation.

Ceramics and Cement Industry

Kiln Combustion Chambers and Kiln Furniture: Silica bricks are formed into saggars, shelves, and other kiln furniture. They withstand high temperatures and product loads with excellent thermal shock and abrasion resistance, allowing multiple reuses, reducing costs while maintaining product quality.

Ceramic Kiln Linings: Resist high-temperature flame and flue gas erosion, minimize heat loss, improve kiln thermal insulation and efficiency, and provide stable firing environments that enhance product quality and production efficiency.

Chemical Industry
In high-temperature chemical reactors, silica bricks serve as furnace linings, resisting reaction-induced high temperatures and chemical corrosion, ensuring safety and maintaining optimal reaction conditions.

Refractory Insulation Layers
Silica bricks are used as insulation layers in industrial kilns and equipment. Their low thermal conductivity reduces heat loss, lowers energy consumption, enhances thermal efficiency, and protects the environment and personnel from thermal hazards.

Building Materials Industry
In producing new building materials like refractory fibers and ceramic fibers, silica bricks line equipment, resisting high temperatures and abrasion to ensure process stability and improve product quality and yield.

Advantages of Silica Bricks Over Other Refractory Materials

High Refractoriness and Thermal Stability:

Silica bricks have refractoriness between 1770°C and 1830°C, surpassing many common refractories. They maintain stable physicochemical properties at ultra-high temperatures, resisting melting, softening, or deformation. They are ideal for glass furnaces, blast furnaces, and other kilns needing extreme refractoriness.

Stable Crystal Structure:
At high temperatures, silica minerals transform into mullite and silica phases, stabilizing the crystal structure. This helps silica bricks retain shape and strength under thermal loads, providing reliable kiln support.

Superior Thermal Shock Stability:
Silica minerals show minimal volume change during heating and cooling, so silica bricks resist cracking or spalling caused by thermal stress, unlike refractories that undergo large volume changes. This ensures durability during temperature cycles in kiln operations.

Excellent Erosion Resistance:
Silica bricks exhibit outstanding chemical stability, resisting corrosion from high-temperature slags, glass melts, and gases. Their dense microstructure prevents penetration by corrosive media, enhancing erosion resistance and extending lining lifespan.

High Load Softening Temperature:
With a load softening temperature between 1500°C and 1650°C, silica bricks sustain high-temperature mechanical loads without deformation. This maintains kiln structural integrity, preventing sagging or failure under weight and heat.
