Introduction
Silica brick is a refractory product with an SiO₂ content exceeding 93%, manufactured using silica raw materials with an SiO₂ content of no less than 96%. It is produced through processes such as mixing, molding, drying, and firing, with mineralizers and binders added during production. The higher the SiO₂ content, the higher the refractoriness. Additives like Fe₂O₃ and CaO act as mineralizers, while impurities such as MgO, K₂O, and Na₂O degrade the refractory's high-temperature performance.
The mineral phase of silica brick consists mainly of tridymite and cristobalite, with minor amounts of residual quartz, a glass phase formed at high temperatures, and other complex phase structures. True density is a key indicator of crystalline transformation: a lower true density indicates a higher content of tridymite and cristobalite, less residual quartz, lower residual expansion, and slower strength degradation during use.
Silica brick is an acidic refractory material resistant to corrosion by acidic slags or solutions but vulnerable to attack by alkaline substances. It exhibits a high load-bearing softening temperature, typically ranging from 1640°C to 1680°C. Above 300°C, it maintains volume stability close to its melting point. When heated to 1450°C, it undergoes a total volume expansion of 1.5%–2.2%, making it suitable for applications such as:
`Carbonization chambers of coke ovens
`Roofs and pool walls of glass kilns
`High-temperature load-bearing components of hot blast furnaces and charcoal roasters
These properties make silica bricks suitable for lining thermal kilns in various industries.
Advantage
1. High Refractoriness and Load-Bearing Capacity
Silica bricks exhibit high refractoriness, typically ranging from 1670–1710°C, and a load softening temperature of 1640–1680°C. This allows them to maintain structural integrity under high-temperature and heavy-load conditions, making them suitable for critical components in kilns and furnaces.
2. Excellent Volume Stability at High Temperatures
Above 300°C, silica bricks show minimal volume change close to their melting point. When heated to 1450°C, they undergo a controlled total volume expansion (1.5%–2.2%), which helps form a dense, tight masonry structure and prevents thermal stress-induced cracking.
3. Superior Resistance to Acidic Media
As acidic refractories, silica bricks are highly resistant to corrosion from acidic slags, solutions, and gases (e.g., SiO₂-rich melts in glass or steel production). This makes them ideal for lining carbonization chambers in coke ovens, as well as glass kiln roofs and pool walls.
4. Low Thermal Expansion Coefficient
Silica bricks have a low thermal expansion coefficient, reducing the risk of thermal spalling caused by rapid temperature fluctuations. This enhances their durability in environments with frequent heating and cooling cycles.
5. Good Thermal Conductivity
Compared to other refractories (e.g., fireclay bricks), silica bricks offer higher thermal conductivity, enabling efficient heat transfer in applications like hot blast furnace regenerators and charcoal roasters.

Raw Materials
Silica (quartz) with a minimum SiO₂ content of 96% is the primary raw material. Impurities such as Al₂O₃, Fe₂O₃, CaO, MgO, K₂O, and Na₂O are strictly controlled to ≤4% to avoid degrading high-temperature performance.

process
Raw material preparation:
Silica raw materials such as vein quartz, quartzite, and quartz sandstone are selected for their high purity, low impurity content, and low iron content. Waste silica bricks or powder can be crushed and screened for reuse as secondary raw materials. Mineralizers and burnout additives are also incorporated:
Common mineralizers: Alumina, iron oxide, magnesium oxide
Burnout additives: Carbon powder, graphite
Molding:
Mechanical Molding: Processed raw materials are blended in specific ratios and mechanically pressed using brick presses or hydraulic presses. This method is efficient and cost-effective, making it suitable for mass production.
Manual Molding: Bricks are handcrafted using molds, offering flexibility for custom shapes and sizes. This is ideal for small batches or specialized applications.
Drying:
After molding, brick blanks must be dried to remove moisture. Drying must be carefully controlled in terms of rate, temperature, and ventilation to prevent cracking or deformation due to uneven drying.
Firing:
Heating Stage: Dried brick blanks are gradually heated in a kiln to prevent thermal shock-induced cracking.
Soaking Stage: A constant high temperature is maintained to facilitate complete SiO₂ polymorphic transformation, improving product density and strength.
Cooling Stage: Slow cooling minimizes internal stress caused by rapid temperature changes.
Application
Silica bricks are well-suited for specific industrial applications due to their unique properties:
Coke Ovens:Used in components such as carbonization and combustion chambers, silica bricks withstand high temperatures, pressure, and chemical erosion, ensuring the coke oven's proper operation.
Glass Kilns: Silica bricks are widely used in the melting zone, clarification zone, and regenerator of glass kilns. They resist corrosion from molten glass and high-temperature effects, extending the kiln's service life.
Hot Blast Furnaces:In high-temperature sections like the arch and furnace walls, silica bricks provide high-temperature strength and volume stability, ensuring efficient furnace operation.
Steel and Non-ferrous Metallurgy: In acid open-hearth and electric furnaces, silica bricks serve as lining materials for roofs and walls, resisting acidic slag corrosion and high-temperature erosion.
Ceramic Kiln:Used in components such as roofs and walls, silica bricks endure high temperatures and thermal stress fluctuations during ceramic firing, maintaining product quality.
Advantages:
High Refractoriness: 1690–1710°C, suitable for extreme high-temperature environments
Acid Resistance: Withstands acidic slag corrosion, ideal for acid-based industrial kilns
High-Temperature Strength: Maintains structural stability under prolonged thermal stress
Excellent Thermal Conductivity: Promotes efficient heat transfer and uniform temperature
Volume Stability: Minimizes deformation during extended high-temperature operation
