Introduction
Cordierite is an aluminum-magnesium silicate mineral with excellent refractory properties. Its chemical formula is Mg₂Al₄Si₅O₁₈. The presence of magnesium, aluminum, and silicon in its crystal structure gives it unique thermal resistance. As a refractory raw material, it features a low coefficient of thermal expansion, excellent thermal shock stability, resistance to thermal shock and cold shrinkage, and low thermal conductivity. These properties enable effective heat insulation, reduced heat loss, and improved thermal efficiency. Suitable for lightweight refractory products, cordierite is often used in high-temperature industrial applications in the form of natural minerals or synthetic powders.
Advantage
Fire resistance: The theoretical fire resistance of cordierite can reach 1460–1550 °C. It does not melt easily at high temperatures, allowing it to withstand prolonged exposure to high-temperature environments.
Thermal shock stability: Cordierite has an extremely low thermal expansion coefficient (approximately 1.0 × 10⁻⁶/°C), giving it excellent thermal shock resistance. It is not prone to cracking under rapid temperature changes, making it suitable for conditions involving frequent heating and cooling, such as kiln linings and heating equipment.
Chemical stability: Cordierite has a certain degree of resistance to acidic slag and molten metal erosion. However, it has weak alkali resistance and should therefore be kept away from strong alkaline substances.
Density: With a density of 2.5–2.7 g/cm³, cordierite has a lightweight texture that helps reduce the overall weight of refractory products.
Thermal conductivity: Cordierite exhibits low thermal conductivity, providing a certain level of thermal insulation and helping to reduce heat loss.
Process
Natural Cordierite:
It mainly originates from metamorphic rock deposits such as gneiss and crystalline schist and is used directly after beneficiation, crushing, and grinding. Natural minerals often contain impurities (such as Fe₂O₃, CaO, etc.) that can affect their refractory properties and therefore need to be purified.
Synthetic Cordierite:
Raw materials: Industrial-grade magnesium oxide (MgO), alumina (Al₂O₃), and silicon dioxide (SiO₂) are used as the primary raw materials (e.g., talc, kaolin, bauxite, etc.) and are mixed in specific proportions.
Process: Cordierite powder is synthesized through high-temperature sintering (usually at 1300–1500 °C), allowing for controllable purity and performance, making it suitable for high-end refractory applications.

Application
Ceramics Industry:
Cordierite is used to manufacture kiln furniture such as scaffolding plates, saggars, and push plates for ceramic kilns. Its thermal shock resistance and refractoriness help extend the service life of kiln furniture.
It is also used as a raw material for high-temperature ceramic components, such as spark plug insulators.
Metallurgical Industry:
Cordierite is used as a lining material for ladles and iron ladles, or as an aggregate in casting materials and refractory bricks to resist the scouring and erosion caused by molten metal.
Chemical Industry and Environmental Protection:
It is used as a lining material in high-temperature reactors and burners, and in catalytic combustion devices and automotive exhaust purification carriers, due to its high-temperature resistance and excellent thermal shock stability.
Other Fields:
Cordierite is also used in refractory coatings, insulation materials, and as a filler in electronic ceramic substrates to improve thermal stability.
